This experiment was designed to investigate the effect of classical music and rock music on the speed of spatial reasoning of the subjects.60 subjects were told to listen the music played for 10 minutes.The subjects were not told which type of music they are listening to.All the subject resoned faster in the classical music compared to the rock music.An Independent T-Test that compared the mean of the two observations showed that the reasoning speed is greater in classical music compared to rock Music at 5% significance level when the classical music are used rather than the rock music coherent with the hypothesis.
A large sample of 60 subjects were chosen.They were divided into 2 groups of sample.
Subjects were randomly chosen and also distributed randomly into 2 groups.This is to improve reliability and in this,the proportion of gender in both the samples were made equally distributed.
Subjects chosen were all left-handed as most left-handed people are right-brained.Spatial reasoning has also been said that it activates more in the right hemisphere of the brain. 19
This allows this experiment to be generally applicable to Year 5 students in the school.Since subjects of older age are more exposed to music and also prone to tone-deafness,subjects of younger age were chosen.Subjects that had used any auditory aids and are generally tone-deaf by birth were replaced in order to reduce anomalous results.
The task given was also chosen carefully to avoid the subjects from feeling stressed up while completing it.Tangram20 is chosen as the task in this experiment as it offers a form of entertainment as well as learning skills.This is because by doing up the tangram,it helps in recognizing shapes,creative problem solving, and also pattern design skills which is a good measure of spatial reasoning of each subject which requires full concentration.
The music chosen was also selected carefully.The both music has piano as the main instrument played.This is done in order to avoid influence of the different types of sound effects by different musical instruments.
The subjects were also not informed on what type of music is being played on the headphones so as to avoid music perception to interfere the results being collected.
The music was not stopped after the 10 minutes of hearing but continuously played while the tangram was given.This was to avoid the provocation of silence in reasoning ability of the subject.The pausing of the song may cause the subjects to deviate their concentration to any other environmental sound,effecting the results obtained.
In conclusion,the results were relatively reliable and valid since a large sample is used and the possible errors are rectified to be at the lowest degree.
